    Head south crossing the UNESCO ksar of Aït Benhaddou. Enter the Draa Valley at Agdz where the palm groves begin. Kasbahs and ksour villages line the river at every turn. Overnight in Agdz.

    Follow the Draa through continuous palm groves and ksar towns. Visit the oases of Timiderte and Tinfou. Arrive in Zagora and photograph the famous 'Timbuktu 52 Days by camel' signpost. Overnight in riad.

    Day 3 — Zagora to Tamegroute to M'Hamid (85 km)
    Morning visit to the ancient Quranic library at Tamegroute (12th-century Islamic manuscripts) and its green-glazed pottery cooperative. Continue south to M'Hamid el Ghizlane — the last town before the open desert. Afternoon stroll in the local dune field.

    Leave all roads behind. 50 km of Saharan piste across the open desert to reach Erg Chegaga — a 40 km-long sand sea rising 100 metres above the desert floor. Arrive at sunset. Set up traditional Berber bivouac camp. Nomadic Berber musicians perform by the campfire under a sky blazing with stars.

    Full day in the dunes: pre-dawn camel trek to the crest for a Saharan sunrise, sandboarding, and a visit to the last Tuareg nomadic families who maintain their traditional way of life deep in the erg. Afternoon rest in the shade of the dunes. Second night under the stars.

    Day 6 — Return to Zagora via Prehistoric Rock Carvings (piste)
    Morning 4x4 return across the desert, stopping at the ancient Neolithic rock carvings near Foum Zguid. Rejoin tarmac at Foum Zguid and drive north to Zagora for a final riad overnight.
