Planning a desert tour in southern Morocco is exciting — but timing your trip can make the difference between a comfortable, unforgettable adventure and a sweltering, exhausting one. The best time to visit southern Morocco depends on what you want to do, where you’re headed, and how you handle heat.

This guide covers every month of the year across the key destinations we know best: Ouarzazate, Merzouga, Zagora, Todra Gorge, Dades Valley, and Jebel Saghro. Whether you’re planning a private 4×4 tour through the gorges or a multi-day VTT mountain bike adventure, this is the honest, local picture.

1. Southern Morocco climate — what you need to know first

Southern Morocco sits between the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert, which creates a dramatic, arid climate unlike anywhere else in North Africa. Ouarzazate, our base, sits at around 1,150 metres above sea level — high enough to keep summer temperatures more bearable than the low desert, but warm enough to give you sunshine almost year-round.

Three climate zones affect your trip:

  • The pre-desert valleys (Dades, Todra, Draa) — hot days, cool nights, rare rain
  • The high desert plateaus (Jebel Saghro) — extreme temperature swings, often snow in January and above 35°C in July
  • The Sahara dunes (Merzouga, Erg Chebbi, Zagora) — genuinely extreme: summer days can reach 45°C, winter nights drop below freezing

Knowing which zones your tour covers tells you exactly when to come.

2. Month-by-month breakdown: weather and conditions

January & February

OuarzazateMerzougaJebel Saghro
Daytime temp15–18°C16–20°C8–14°C
Night temp2–5°C4–7°C-2–3°C
ConditionsCold nights, sunny daysCold nights, clear skiesPossible snow on passes

Verdict: Beautiful, clear light and almost no crowds. Cold nights are manageable with layers. Jebel Saghro mountain bike routes may be inaccessible after snowfall, but valley 4×4 routes are generally fine. One of the least-visited periods — great for budget travelers and those who want a quiet, authentic experience.

March & April

OuarzazateMerzougaJebel Saghro
Daytime temp22–26°C24–28°C18–24°C
Night temp8–12°C10–14°C6–10°C
ConditionsPerfectPerfectExcellent for biking

Verdict: The best time to visit southern Morocco for most travelers. Warm days, cool evenings, wildflowers in the valleys. All routes are fully accessible. This is peak season — book your 4×4 tour or VTT tour at least 6–8 weeks in advance.

May

OuarzazateMerzougaJebel Saghro
Daytime temp28–32°C30–34°C24–28°C
Night temp13–17°C15–18°C10–14°C
ConditionsWarm, manageableGetting hotIdeal last window for biking

Verdict: Still very good, especially for early-morning departures. The second half of May can push into uncomfortable territory in Merzouga, but Dades, Todra, and Jebel Saghro remain excellent. A smart choice if March/April is fully booked.

June, July & August

OuarzazateMerzougaJebel Saghro
Daytime temp36–40°C40–45°C32–38°C
Night temp20–24°C22–26°C16–22°C
ConditionsVery hotExtreme heatToo hot for cycling

Verdict: Not recommended for desert touring. Merzouga in July regularly reaches 45°C — heat exhaustion risk is real. Some experienced desert travelers visit in summer specifically for the drama of the landscape, but we advise against multi-day tours in these months unless you have extensive desert experience. If you must visit in summer, stick to early morning and late afternoon activities only.

September & October

OuarzazateMerzougaJebel Saghro
Daytime temp30–34°C33–37°C26–30°C
Night temp16–20°C18–22°C12–16°C
ConditionsExcellentVery goodGood for biking

Verdict: Autumn is the second-best time to visit southern Morocco. September can still be warm in Merzouga, but by October the heat breaks and conditions across all our routes are near-perfect. The date palms in the Draa Valley and the colours in Dades Gorge are stunning in October. This is our favourite month to run tours.

November & December

OuarzazateMerzougaJebel Saghro
Daytime temp18–22°C20–24°C12–18°C
Night temp5–9°C8–12°C2–6°C
ConditionsGood, quieterGoodCold mornings on passes

Verdict: November is an underrated gem — warm days, cold nights, very few tourists, and great light for photography. December brings colder nights but clear, stable weather. A warm sleeping bag is essential for any desert camp stay. Holiday travelers who come at Christmas are often surprised by how cold Sahara nights can get.

3. Best months for a 4×4 desert tour

For a 4×4 tour covering Ouarzazate, Dades Gorge, Todra Gorge, Zagora, and Merzouga, the sweet spot is:

First choice: March, April, and October Comfortable temperatures across all elevations, all piste tracks accessible, desert camps pleasant at night.

Second choice: November, February, and May Slightly cooler or warmer depending on the month, but all routes open and tour quality very high. Fewer crowds than the peak spring window.

Avoid: June, July, August Midday temperatures in the Sahara make 4×4 tours genuinely unsafe unless activity is limited to early morning and evening.

4. Best months for a VTT mountain bike tour

VTT touring in Jebel Saghro, the Dades Valley, and the Draa Valley has a narrower ideal window because of the physical effort involved.

First choice: March, April, and October Temperature and terrain conditions are ideal. Jebel Saghro piste tracks are dry and rideable. The climb to Tizi n’Tazazert pass (2,200m) is demanding but not dangerous.

Second choice: November and February Mountain mornings are cold but trail conditions are excellent. Manageable with proper cycling kit.

Avoid: May through September Heat at altitude in Jebel Saghro becomes a serious safety issue from late May onward. We suspend multi-day VTT tours in June, July, and August.

5. Peak season vs. off-season: what changes

Understanding when to come also means understanding what shifts with the season.

In peak season (March–April, October):

  • Desert camps are busy — popular camps book out weeks ahead
  • Guided tours require advance booking (we recommend 6–8 weeks)
  • Prices at riads and auberges are at their highest
  • The experience is livelier, more social

In shoulder season (November, February, May):

  • Much quieter on the ground
  • Better deals on accommodation
  • Still excellent weather
  • Our tours run with smaller, more intimate groups

In summer (June–August):

  • Very few Western tourists
  • Domestic Moroccan tourism continues
  • We do not operate multi-day desert tours in this period for safety reasons

6. What to pack for each season

Spring and Autumn (March–May, September–November)

  • Light layers for the day, a fleece or light jacket for evenings
  • Sun hat, sunscreen SPF 50+, quality sunglasses
  • Comfortable walking shoes and one pair of closed hiking shoes
  • A scarf (essential for Sahara dust and sun protection)

Winter (December–February)

  • Warm fleece or down jacket — desert nights are genuinely cold
  • Thermal base layer for VTT cycling
  • Warm hat and gloves for early mornings
  • Everything from the spring list above

Summer (not recommended — but if you go)

  • Loose, light-coloured, long-sleeved cotton clothing
  • Minimum 3 litres of water per person per day
  • Activity only between 6am–10am and after 5pm

7. Frequently asked questions

What is the absolute best month to visit southern Morocco? October is our top pick overall. The heat has broken after summer, the light is stunning, crowds are lower than spring, and all 4×4 and VTT routes are fully accessible.

Is it too hot for a desert tour in May? Early May is generally fine. Late May in Merzouga and Zagora can be uncomfortably hot, particularly in the early afternoon. We recommend early-morning departures and scheduling dune activities for late afternoon.

Can I visit Merzouga in winter? Yes. Daytime temperatures in December and January are pleasant (16–20°C). The main challenge is the Sahara night — temperatures drop sharply after sunset. A quality desert camp will provide warm blankets, but bring your own extra layers.

How far in advance should I book a tour? For March, April, and October, we recommend booking 6–8 weeks ahead. For other months, 2–3 weeks is usually enough. Contact us to check availability.

Is southern Morocco safe to visit year-round? Yes — Morocco is one of the safest countries in North Africa for tourism. Our guides are licensed, experienced, and from the region. All vehicles are maintained 4×4 Land Cruisers suitable for piste and off-road conditions.
